This Mother’s Day, honour your mother by helping the tens of
millions of animals suffering on our nation’s factory farms. Canadian animal
agriculture deprives 1.3 million sows, 35 million hens, and 1.4 million dairy
cows—all mothers who form strong bonds with their babies just like our
own mothers do—of everything that is natural and important to them.
Mother pigs can only see their piglets through the bars of barren,
metal farrowing crates, and are forced to watch as their weakest piglets are
“thumped” (swung by their rear legs and smashed headfirst against
concrete), as our undercover investigation at a Manitoba pig factory farm revealed.
Egg-laying hens spend their lives in crowded, metal battery cages so
small they are unable to even fully stretch their wings. Crammed five to eleven birds per cage, hens
are deprived of nesting material and private space for laying their eggs. They
are denied the chance to be the doting, protective mothers they were born to
be.
Dairy cows are robbed of their calves so that their milk can be consumed
by humans instead. After a gestation period as long as our own, cows aren’t
even able to fully clean their calves before they are dragged away.
We all have the power to help mothers confined on factory farms by
adopting a kind and compassionate, vegan lifestyle. Visit ChooseVeg.ca for delicious recipes to honour all mothers this Mother’s Day.
