STUDY: Beans No Less Satisfying Than Meat

Sarah Von Alt September 24, 2015
If you’re vegetarian or vegan, you’ve probably heard a
friend or family member say something like this: “Aren’t you always hungry?
Vegetarian food just isn’t satisfying.
A new piece by The
Huffington Post is highlighting how
wrong they are. A recent study by researchers at the University of Minnesota found
that beans and beef can be equally satisfying.
According to the author, the study participants were given a
meat-based meatloaf one day and a bean-based one the next. “Three hours after
consuming each of the lunches, participants reported the same amount of
fullness. They also ate the same amount of calories for their next meal,
indicating they really were equally satiated by both dishes.
Science has clearly demonstrated not only that vegetarian foods
are satiating, but also that they have an edge when it comes to protecting us
from things like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
In fact, researchers at Loma Linda University discovered
that vegetarians have a 53 percent reduced
risk for diabetes
, and an 11-year British study of 45,000 volunteers found
that a vegetarian diet could cut
one’s risk of heart disease
by as much as 32 percent.
Plant-based foods have not only the ability to protect our
health, but also the potential to spare countless animals from a lifetime of
suffering. On modern farms, animals are treated as mere meat, milk, and egg
machines, and their short lives are filled with misery and deprivation.
Luckily, we can remove our support from an industry that
treats animals like unfeeling objects and protect our own health from some of
today’s top killers by replacing meat with healthy, humane foods.
