On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court
upheld a $5.8 million judgment against Tyson Foods in favor of the workers who sued
the company.
In 2007, more than 3,000 current and former
employees of a Tyson pork processing facility in Iowa sued the company because
they had not been paid for overtime. A jury awarded the workers $5.8 million
for past due wages. Tyson refused to accept responsibility and took the case to
the Supreme Court, which ruled against it. Now Tyson has no choice but to pay its
employees what they are rightfully owed.
Mercy For Animals held a
demonstration in front of the Supreme Court building while the case was being heard,
protesting Tyson’s policies, which abuse both animals and people. Not only does
Tyson cheat its workers out of their wages, but its employees face dangerous
conditions every workday.
Moreover, MFA has documented
egregious animal cruelty time and again at several Tyson facilities,
including a factory farm that was
shut down in response to our investigative and legal advocacy work.
Although the Supreme Court held Tyson
accountable for treating its workers unfairly, Tyson still needs to take
responsibility for the animals under its care. Please sign the petition urging Tyson Foods to adopt a
meaningful animal welfare policy.
