A TikTok user has been posting sweet videos of the tender relationship between her pig, Maple, and blind senior chihuahua—and you have to see it.
In this video, which has amassed just under 50,000 views, Maple the pig very carefully joins her doggy brother in bed. You see how cautious she is as she very slowly snuggles up beside him.
Another video shows Maple and the pup cuddling together on a blanket while their mom works on the computer.
A third video shows the tiny chihuahua digging in blankets near Maple’s head while she calmly waits for him to lie down.
These adorable videos raise the question—if pigs can love, play, and feel pain like dogs, why are they not shown the same compassion and respect?
The Truth About Pigs
Most pigs born in the United States endure unimaginable suffering. Pregnant sows are confined in barren metal cages so small they’re unable to turn around, piglets are castrated without painkillers, and sick piglets are slammed headfirst into concrete floors.
This is done even though pigs are widely regarded as one of the most intelligent nonhuman animals. These incredible beings have deep interior lives and can express a wide range of emotions. And they love to cuddle and play—just like dogs!
As the philosopher Jeremy Bentham said: “The question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?” All farmed animals have their own unique qualities, and there is no meaningful difference between them and the animals who share our homes.
