According to Live Science, the country’s largest physicians group is urging hospitals to offer nutritious plant-based foods.
The American Medical Association is calling on U.S. hospitals to improve patient, staff, and visitor health by “providing a variety of healthful food, including plant-based meals and meals that are low in fat, sodium, and added sugars” and “eliminating processed meats from menus,” among other things.
At the group’s annual meeting, Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, compared unhealthy food served in hospitals to tobacco: “A generation ago, the AMA supported doctors who were working to get tobacco out of their hospitals. And that helped everyone, especially those patients who needed to break a bad habit.
Dr. Barnard added that like cigarettes, hot dogs and other processed meats are now known to cause certain cancers. In 2015, the World Health Organization placed processed meats in the same category of cancer risk as asbestos and cigarettes.
The AMA’s resolution is a great move in the right direction. Countless studies have shown that consumption of animal products is directly linked to various cancers, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and an overall shorter lifespan.
The negative effects on human health are only part of the problem. Animals at modern farms are treated as mere objects, and their short lives are filled with misery and pain. Cows, pigs, and chickens are subjected to extreme confinement; barbaric mutilations; and bloody, violent deaths.
