Torturing Pigs: It’s Only Natural?

Reporting
on this year’s Banff Pork Seminar, the Western
Hog Journal
featured a talk by American professor Dr. Wesley Jamison. According
to his biography, Dr. Jamison “teaches Public Relations classes,
Persuasion, Political Communication, and Communication Theory.”

 

When
speaking about cruel, restrictive gestation crates and the public’s
overwhelming demand for a ban on their use, he states: “In effect,
consumers are hypocrites because they desire animals both as companions and
commodities.”

 

He
urges pig producers to “give consumers permission to live like
hypocrites,” and to “manage through rationalization” by telling consumers
that “their incongruence is natural, normal and right” and “their
consumption choices are correct and justified.”

 

So,
while even a big ag apologist like Dr. Jamison recognizes the hypocrisy of treating
some animals as friends, and others as food, consumers should just be told to
ignore the moral inconsistency and mindlessly plod along. Society should in
effect give producers license to do whatever they please to farmed animals, whether
it’s confining them to cages so small they’re unable to even turn around,
mutilating them without painkillers, or killing them by smashing their heads
against concrete (a practice called “thumping” and defended by folks
like Jamison).

 

What
Dr. Jamison is selling is dangerous, and frankly, disgusting. The dirty secrets
of Big Ag are out. No “rationalization” will send that genie back into the
bottle.

suffering of farmed animals by aligning your eating habits with your ethics. For
