As plant-based eating continues to grow in popularity amongst celebrities and other consumers, leading nutritionists are also giving vegetarian living their seal of approval. Recently, vegan nutrition was the focus of a U.S. News and World Report article titled “The Mainstreaming of Vegan Diets.”
Helping to dispel common myths about vegan nutrition, Vandana Sheth – a registered dietician and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, says, “Properly planned vegan diets are healthy, nutritionally adequate and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of many diseases.”
According to the article, vegetarians and vegans enjoy lower risk of developing heart disease and cancer, healthier body mass indexes, lower blood pressure, and better control and prevention of diabetes. “[N]utritionists now believe that a well-thought-out vegan eating plan could be the most healthy way to live for most people,” writes reporter Dennis Thompson. Just as importantly, plant-based diets effectively prevent needless animal suffering in hatcheries, factory farms, and slaughterhouses.
