Veganism Gaining Popularity in India

mutter-paneer 113.JPGA recent article in The Hindu highlights the increasing popularity of veganism in India. Because many typical South Indian dishes are already vegan and dairy replacements, such as soy milk, have become more accessible, eating vegan in India has never been easier!

Indians following a vegan diet enjoy popular dishes such as sambar, rasam, idli, and dosa. In the city of Chennai, dubbed the “friendliest city in India for vegans,” one can enjoy cruelty-free treats from the brand Terra, such as banana-coconut milk smoothies.

There are several reasons that Indians are increasingly choosing to eat vegan. Chennai-based Dr. Nandita Shah, who founded the diabetes awareness group SHARAN, stated that she guides her patients to choose a whole foods, plant-based diet because of the many health benefits that come with it.

Others become vegan out of concern for the environment. Above all, veganism protects animals from cruel practices and saves precious lives.
