According to NBC News, internet grocery delivery giant Instacart predicts veganism as a continuing trend for 2017.
Rebecca Silliman, head of communications at Instacart, said that according to the company’s newly released 2017 food trends report, dairy alternatives surged in popularity last year and should continue to grow this year.
Searches for the term “non-dairy” were up 222 percent, while searches for “non-dairy ice cream” and “dairy-free creamer” were up 228 percent and 213 percent, respectively. Coconut, soy, and almond milks are all having a moment, and are in everything from yogurt to ice cream to creamer.
This should come as no surprise to the food industry. Over the past decade, veganism has seen consistent growth as millennials, the world’s largest generation, purchase their own foods. This health-conscious generation, which is also concerned about the environment and animal welfare, boasts a greater number of self-identifying vegetarians than any other, explains The New York Times.
NBC also reports that according to Google, searches for “vegan” increased by 33 percent in the past year alone. This is slightly higher than the increase from 2015 to 2016.
New York-based Baum + Whiteman has also released its 2017 food and restaurants forecast and expects to see an uptick in vegan meat sales as meat lovers wean themselves off of animal products. Additionally, the group anticipates an increase in vegan butcher shops.
