was a big year for veganism. Headlines around the world propelled the term into
the mainstream.
According to search engine giant Google, the search interest
for “vegan spiked in 2015, increasing 32 percent from the previous year. This
can surely be tied to the plethora of positive news stories about plant-based
diets and the growing number of vegans.
In 2015, millennials
surpassed baby boomers
as the world’s largest generation. With millennials
comes an increase in plant-based eating, as 12
percent
of them identify as committed vegetarians.
Google found that residents of Portland, Seattle, and Los
Angeles most often searched for vegan topics and the top searched questions
containing the word included What is a
vegan? What do vegans eat? and What
is vegan leather?
As one-seventh of the world’s population uses Google,
skyrocketing searches are great news for vegans.
