Potential Mad Cow Quietly Slipped Into Food Supply System

Last month, agriculture bigwig
Michael Nabuurs was fined $2,500 after
pleading guilty to a charge under the federal Meat Inspection Act. Nabuurs is
the past Executive Director of the PEI Federation of Agriculture and the
current president of Atlantic Beef Products Inc., a cattle slaughterhouse in
Albany, PEI.

The conviction was the result of
Nabuurs illegally forcing a lame, emaciated cow to the kill floor of his
slaughterhouse against the order of a veterinarian working for the Canadian
Food Inspection Agency.

The CFIA veterinarian ordered the suffering animal
be killed in the holding area and the body subsequently disposed of. Nabuurs
ignored both of these mandatory instructions, despite the animal showing signs
indicative of Mad Cow Disease, and despite the company’s claim that Atlantic
Beef Products Inc. provides “the highest quality beef in the world.”
The animal’s body presumably ended up in the food supply system.

Meat Trade News Daily reported on
the case, referring to the CFIA veterinarian as a “silly bloody meat inspector“,
providing further evidence of the widespread contempt for animals endemic to
the livestock industry.

Concerned Canadians can help
prevent such needless violence and cruelty to animals, and avoid contaminated
meat, by ditching animal products in favor of healthy and humane plant-based
alternatives. Visit ChooseVeg.ca to learn more.
