Summer Miguel-Strah may just be breaking into her teen years but she is already changing the world for the better. As she spreads the word about the abusive practices of animal agriculture and the benefits of a plant-based diet, she is increasing awareness of farmed animal issues and raising crucial funds to protect them.
Already a vegan herself, Summer chose to use her recent bat mitzvah as an opportunity to share her compassion and knowledge. She penned a heartfelt letter to all of her family, friends, and neighbors, explaining why veganism is so important to her, and asking everyone to donate to MFA. As a result, Summer raised over $4,000 to help farmed animals!
Many of us did not become vegetarian or vegan until high school, college, or beyond. What led Summer to this lifestyle at such a young age? When she and her family moved to Los Angeles a year and a half ago, their new house came with four ducks. They quickly added Rocky the pig and chickens Zelda and Lola to their menagerie. Since then, Summer has felt differently about eating animals.
“Rocky sleeps in my bed at night and Lola and Zelda come running to my back door when they are called. They are adorable, smart, funny, and loving creatures. I could never image eating ham, fried chicken, or Peking duck again!”
Summer is setting a great example for her friends and classmates, who think her veganism is pretty cool. She recently gave her teachers something to think about as well, when she opted out of a frog dissection and wrote about why she believes the project was wrong. Besides animals, Summer loves sports (especially basketball and volleyball), art, math, and history.
MFA is very grateful for the incredible work Summer has done to speak up on behalf of farmed animals. She has a bright future ahead and we look forward to seeing where her compassion will take her!
