Thanks to Calgary-based animal
advocate Clint Robertson and his efforts to bring an end to two of the cruelest
factory farming practices–confining egg-laying hens to battery cages
and pregnant pigs to gestation crates—Calgary Co-op passed a motion at its AGM
yesterday to phase out its sale of eggs and pork from caged animals!
As reported by the Calgary
Herald, Co-op members
voted 97-67 in favour of the resolution, affecting all 24 of the company’s
stores. Calgary Co-op is no small player–the retailer represents 44,000 members and has annual sales of more
than $1 billion.
The phase-out is scheduled to
take place over the next five years.
Calgary Co-op joins the ranks of
other major food companies in Canada, including McDonald’s, Safeway, and
Costco, and over 50 other companies across North America, that are demanding
their suppliers do away with cruel confinement systems.
While this progress is encouraging,
as a recent MFA Canada investigation reveals, the vast majority of pregnant
pigs in Canada continue to be subjected to lives of misery and deprivation to
supply pork to major retailers such as Sobeys, Superstore/Loblaws, Metro, and
Walmart. MFA Canada hopes Calgary Co-op’s announcement will encourage these
retailers to take a stand against egregious cruelty and phase out inherently
cruel gestation crates from their pork supply chains. To learn more, and take
action for these animals, go to PigCruelty.ca.

While retailers have the power to
end some of the most inhumane factory farming practices, consumers can also
help prevent cruelty and promote compassion each time they sit down to eat by
adopting a healthy and humane, plant-based diet. For more information, visit ChooseVeg.ca.
