California May Add Processed Meat to Cancer-Alert List

Sarah Von Alt October 30, 2015
Earlier this week, the World Health Organization made
headlines by placing processed meats in the same category of cancer risk as
asbestos and smoking cigarettes.
Now California is considering adding red and processed meat
to the state’s cancer-alert list.
Passed in 1986, California’s Proposition 65 requires the
state to keep a list of all substances known to increase cancer risk and requires
businesses that sell products with a significant amount of any listed chemical
to notify consumers.
As you might expect, the meat industry intends to fight this
move tooth and nail, claiming the healthfulness of its products.
Reuters
explains:

The inclusion of meat and processed
meat on the list could reduce consumer demand, hurting major producers and
processors like Hormel Foods Corp and JBS USA. It could also open the door
wider for litigation against meat companies from consumers diagnosed with
certain types of cancer.

Not only is meat dangerous to human health; it subjects
billions of animals to miserable factory farm conditions, deprived of
everything that makes life worth living, including sunshine and fresh air.
We can protect our own health and prevent animal suffering
on modern farms by ditching meat and other animal products in favor or healthy,
humane alternatives.
