Contaminated Milk Recall Highlights Need for a Safer, Plant-Based Food System

Jennifer Behr December 1, 2025

The following statement regarding the Prairie Farms milk recall due to potential cleaning agent contamination may be attributed to Jennifer Behr, Director of Plant-Based Initiatives at Mercy For Animals:

“The recall of Prairie Farms Gallon Fat Free Milk, with approximately 320 gallons sold potentially contaminated with food-grade cleaning agents, is a serious public health concern. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent issues within the dairy supply chain, which can put consumers at risk. The dairy industry’s routine use of antibiotics in cattle contributes to the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, posing a serious public health risk by making common infections harder to treat. This industry is a significant contributor to the climate crisis and is fraught with cruelty, typically separating mother cows from their calves shortly after birth.

By contrast, alternatives like oat milk generate three times less greenhouse gas, take up 11 times less land, and use 13 times less water than cow’s milk production. Choosing plant-based milk isn’t just a safeguard against potential contamination issues; it’s an empowering personal choice we can all make every day to fight climate change, improve animal welfare, and promote a healthier, more compassionate food system.”
