In response to last year’s customer survey on Facebook, Domino’s rolled out vegan cheese last week at its Australian locations. But the company seriously underestimated how many people would want plant-based options because they keep running out.
According to Metro, the vegan mozzarella is made by U.S. company Follow Your Heart. Nick Knight, Domino’s CEO for Australia and New Zealand, states:
We knew the response was going to be big after the demand we saw for the product on social media. But we had no idea it was going to be this big. We’re excited that customers love this product as much as we do and that we have been able to source a cheese alternative that vegan customers have given their tick of approval on.
Plant-based eating has truly taken off in Australia. According to a report by Mintel, the number of vegan products in Australia has increased by 92 percent since 2014. Also, market researcher IBISWorld found that dairy-free milk is also booming in Australia. The estimated value of the country’s vegan milk industry is $153 million and is projected to reach $35 billion by 2024.
Globally, the plant-based market as a whole topped over $3.1 billion in sales last year, and a report by the Plant Based Foods Association and The Good Food Institute shows a more than 20 percent increase in purchases of dairy alternatives, such as vegan cheese, ice cream, and yogurt, for a total of over $700 million in sales.
This decline in dairy consumption is great news for cows, who are treated as mere milk-producing machines at factory farms. Cows are forcibly impregnated and kept in terrible conditions. Calves are torn away from their mothers shortly after they are born. Male calves are killed for veal. Females are forced into the dairy herd, trapped in a cycle of abuse for years until they are considered “spent and sent to slaughter.
