According to the Statesman, a food truck in the Netherlands is offering a “My Little Pony horsemeat burger.
The burger is made from the meat of horses retired from a local amusement park. As if the burger’s name and origins weren’t appalling enough, the truck is called Keuken van het Ongewenst Dier, or “The Unwanted Animal Kitchen. To assume retired animals are useless and “unwanted is deplorable.
Head chef Babbe Hengeveld told Vice Munchies:
They don’t sell well because people do feel bad about the idea of eating horse. For some, horses will always be seen as pets in the same way dogs are. Cows and chickens, in many Western cultures, aren’t kept as pets so they’re OK for food.
Indeed, many Americans are disgusted by the idea of eating horses, yet have no issue with eating animals like ducks, chickens, turkeys, lambs, pigs, and cows.
While horses are protected from slaughter in the States, one must question the hypocrisy of eating cows, pigs, chickens, and other farmed animals, who are forced to live in terrible conditions and face daily abuse.
