Market for Vegan Meats Growing

Sarah Von Alt October 21, 2014
An article in The
Guardian
reports an increase in the number of meat alternatives, citing
“growing concerns over health, food safety and sustainability.
While soybeans and wheat have been used as meat substitutes
for centuries, the market for vegan meats had undergone a serious revamp in
recent years, with peas, rice, and other grains making amazing plant-based
meats.
And it’s not just vegetarians consuming these products.
According to the magazine, “In a study carried out by global market research
company Mintel, of the 36% of Americans purchasing meat alternatives
only 7%
identified as vegetarians
. …
… As a result, the range of alternative meat – and fish –
options is growing significantly, from
Beyond Meat’s
vegan ‘beef’ crumble and ‘chicken’ strips, to
Gardein’s
fishless filets to
Yves
meat-free burgers and hot dogs.
The article also touches on the issue of sustainability,
explaining that while eating more local and organic foods is a great step, it’s
not enough. As a global population, we need to significantly reduce the
quantity of meat consumed. The vegan meat market can provide us with high-quality
protein and satisfy our taste buds without resource-intensive animal farming.
