Progress for Hens! Marriott Commits to Banning Cruel Battery Cages Globally

Abraham R December 7, 2018
After just two days of campaigning by Mercy For Animals and the Open Wing Alliance, Marriott International has pledged to ban one of the

worst forms of animal abuse in its global supply chain.
At typical factory farms, egg-laying hens are crammed into tiny cages with several other birds, often with no room to spread their wings. Many birds become trapped and painfully mangled in cage wire or under feed trays. Without assistance, they suffer and die. Dead hens are forgotten and left to rot alongside birds still laying eggs for human consumption. Deprived of any comfort, these intelligent, sensitive animals are treated as mere egg-producing machines. This is animal abuse, and no company with morals should support it.

The campaign spanned the globe. Marriott heard from demonstrators; petition signers; and in the U.S. alone, hundreds of consumers who called, emailed, or messaged to let Marriott know that they would not stand by as the company allowed atrocious animal cruelty.
MFA activated our digital activist network, Hen Heroes, to add to the pressure. Hen Heroes are activists who have committed just two minutes a day to help animals every day. If you’d like to help end some of the worst animal abuse in just a couple of minutes a day, sign up!

Battery cages are cruel, and eliminating them is a great step in the right direction. But the best way to help animals is to keep them off your plate. Check out the newest vegan egg alternative that’s taking the world by storm!
