New Study: Eating Processed Meat Linked to Higher Risk of Dementia

Jessica Salazar August 6, 2024

Recent research provides further insights into the negative impacts of processed meat. A comprehensive study presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference found that substituting processed red meat with healthier options, like nuts, legumes, or tofu, may reduce risk of dementia. Researchers examined the health of 130,000 nurses and other U.S. healthcare professionals, monitoring them for 43 years and gathering information about their dietary habits every two to five years. Specifically, participants were asked about their intake of processed red meat, such as bacon, hotdogs, sausages, salami, and other deli meats. They were also asked about their consumption of nuts and legumes, and the findings indicate that choosing healthier plant-based proteins could benefit brain health.

The study identified over 11,000 cases of dementia. The findings revealed that consuming two portions of processed red meat per week was linked to a 14% increased likelihood of reduced memory and thinking skills. But substituting a daily portion of processed red meat with nuts, beans, or tofu could reduce the risk of dementia by a significant 23%, a tangible way to empower individuals in maintaining their own brain health.

Previous studies have linked eating large quantities of red meat, especially processed meat, over a prolonged period to higher risk of heart disease, colorectal cancer, and type 2 diabetes in both men and women. Prioritizing our health and taking action now is crucial. Incorporating plant-based foods into your meals can be an affordable, sustainable, and healthier way to develop kinder eating habits. With thoughtful meal planning and a few adjustments to your grocery list, you can savor various vegan dishes that will uplift and nourish you.
