Ridiculous! Meat Industry Group Ignores Science, Claims Processed Meats Are Healthy

Joe Loria January 25, 2018
The North American Meat Institute, a meat
industry trade group, has released a video claiming that processed meats—the
stuff loaded with nitrates, sodium, saturated fat, and cholesterol—are part of
a healthy diet. Published on the institute’s YouTube channel, Meat News Network,
the video shows institute representative Janet Riley speaking with Kerri
Gehring, a registered dietitian.
Asked to give “the facts about processed meats,
Dr. Gehring replies:

They’re really no
different than any of our other meat. They fit great within a diet. They are a
great source of protein. They provide iron. They provide vitamin B12. They
provide all different types of nutrients that we need. So there’s no reason at
all that you cannot include processed meats in a normal diet.

No reason at all?! Where to start… Well, for
one thing, the World Health Organization has labeled processed meats a
carcinogen
, placing them in
the same category of cancer risk as asbestos and cigarettes
. According to
the WHO, processed meats are linked to 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide.
Additionally, meat consumption increases one’s risk of diabetes, stroke, heart disease, obesity, Alzheimer’s,
and an overall shorter lifespan
. Dr. Gehring conveniently left all this
out.
She also left out the meat industry’s inherent
cruelty. Animals at factory farms are treated like unfeeling objects, forced to
endure lives of misery
and deprivation
. See for yourself:
The meat industry’s video is obviously biased
and seeks to mislead consumers. The truth is, a plant-based diet contains all
essential nutrients and has been shown to promote longevity and prevent some of
today’s top killers.
By choosing a compassionate vegan diet, you
