Statement from Mercy For Animals Regarding Burnbrae Farms’ Salmonella Egg Recall

Maha Bazzi January 24, 2025

The following statement regarding Burnbrae Farms’ egg recall for salmonella may be attributed to Maha Bazzi, Mercy For Animals’ Director of Animal Welfare Initiatives, U.S. & Canada:

Mercy For Animals is deeply concerned about the recent Burnbrae Farms recall due to potential salmonella contamination in select shell eggs distributed across British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario.

This incident underscores the pressing need for enhanced transparency and improved animal welfare practices in the egg industry. Mercy For Animals has highlighted ambiguities in Burnbrae Farms’ reporting, particularly regarding their continued investment in cage confinement systems. Caging hens not only compromises their well-being but may elevate food safety risks, including bacterial contamination.

Mercy For Animals calls on retailers to take responsibility for ensuring that the products they carry adhere to higher animal welfare and food safety standards. By continuing to source eggs from hens kept in extreme confinement, Canadian retailers contribute to animal suffering and potential risks to consumer health.

We urge Burnbrae Farms and retailers across Canada to prioritize the health and safety of consumers by adopting higher animal welfare standards and committing to phasing out the use of cages. Implementing less cruel and more sanitary farming practices is essential to reducing risks of future contamination events.

Mercy For Animals remains dedicated to advocating for farmed animals and promoting a food system that is both ethical and safe for all.
