Generation Moderation: Study Shows Millennials Are Moving Away From Meat

Joe Loria June 7, 2016
A recent article in the Daily Mail discusses a study by Plate for the Planet revealing a sweeping trend: millennials cutting out or cutting back on meat.
“Generation Moderation, or millennials, is not only the largest generation but the generation with the largest percentage of self-identified vegetarians and vegans. In fact, nearly 12 percent of millennials avoid animal products. Many do so for environmental and health reasons, but the sharp decrease in meat consumption also spares millions of animals from slaughter.
The article states:

Whether it’s for environmental or health reasons, younger generations are embracing real alternatives to meat, with nearly half (48 per cent) of 16 to 19-year-olds and 40 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds agreeing that a meat free diet, or one where we eat less meat, is better for the environment.

This new consumer trend has sparked the opening of businesses like the Vegetarian Butcher in Europe and the Herbivorous Butcher in Minneapolis. Even major brands like General Mills are noticing this switch. Just a few weeks ago the company announced it would invest in vegan cheese company Kite Hill.
Social media may be the vehicle for this change. Regardless of how or why they’re going veg, Generation Moderation is creating a more compassionate world.
