The following statement may be attributed to Maha Bazzi, Director of Animal Welfare Initiatives, U.S. & Canada, at Mercy For Animals:
The recent allegations concerning Campbell’s products underscore a critical lack of transparency and commitment to consumer values. While the company denies claims about ‘bioengineered meat,’ a thorough examination of its animal welfare practices is imperative. Campbell’s has significantly weakened its commitment to the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC), a set of standards designed to reduce the immense suffering of chickens raised for meat, and does not transparently share its progress.
Campbell’s must accelerate progress and publish a roadmap toward the full, original Better Chicken Commitment. Chickens raised for meat endure extreme suffering in factory farms. This course of action is not just a moral imperative to reduce animal cruelty, but a necessary step to align their supply chain with the demands of ethically-minded consumers.
