BREAKING! Historic Law Proposed in Mexico Following Explosive MFA Investigations

It was without a doubt one of the most harrowing and disturbing investigations ever conducted by Mercy For Animals: cows and pigs violently kicked and beaten, painfully shocked with electric prongs in their faces and eyes, stabbed repeatedly and left to choke on their own blood and vomit, and even cut open while still conscious and able to feel pain. These sickening abuses were documented at municipal slaughterhouses in numerous states across Mexico.

Thankfully, these horrors will not go unanswered. Today, nine members of Mexico’s congress formally introduced legislation that would make it a crime to slaughter an animal who had not been properly stunned. This legislative move is in direct response to the international outcry from millions, including Mexican superstar Eugenio Derbez, over the footage from MFA’s groundbreaking investigation. If enacted, the proposed legislation would be the first of its kind in Mexico.

The nine congress members making this historic legislative push are Dip. Javier García (PRD), Dip. René Cervera (Movimiento Ciudadano), Dip. Alejandra Gutierrez Guajardo (PAN), Dip. Laura Esquivel (MORENA), Dip. Vidal Llerenas Morales (MORENA), Dip. Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo (PRD), Dip. Verónica Delgadillo (Movimiento Ciudadano), Dip. Salvador Zamora (Movimiento Ciudadano), and Dip. Federico Döring (PAN). They have risen above party lines to join together in their mission to combat animal cruelty. The bill imposes severe penalties on slaughterhouses and workers who fail to render cows, pigs, sheep, and goats unconscious before killing them. MFA’s own Blanka Alfaro was honored to join these officials for a press conference in the halls of Congress to announce the landmark legislation.

Activists in Mexico were instrumental in making this legal move for animal protection a reality. Their message is simple but strong: The Federal Government of Mexico must send a clear message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated. To be painfully shocked, shackled, sliced open, and even immersed in a vat of scalding water—all while still alive and able to feel pain—is a fate that no animal should endure. It is our moral obligation to protect all animals, including those raised and killed for food, from needless misery and suffering.

MFA is incredibly proud to have played a role in the introduction of this landmark bill. Ultimately, however, the best way to protect farmed animals from needless cruelty and suffering is to leave them off our plates altogether and switch to a delicious and compassionate plant-based diet.
