Canada’s largest dairy producer, Saputo, is looking
to invest in the plant-based milk industry, according to Business News
Network.
The Montreal-based company’s CEO, Lino Saputo Jr., told BNN,
“If there would be a great opportunity for us to make an acquisition in that
space that could be something that could interest us quite a bit. Saputo
executives told investors last month that the company could be set to announce
as many as two deals before the end of the fiscal year.
This would be a smart business move for Saputo, considering that
demand for dairy has been waning in North America for decades as consumers move
toward plant-based options. Since 1970 consumption of cow’s milk has fallen a whopping 40 percent in the U.S.,
while sales of dairy-free milk alternatives have soared by 30 percent since 2011.
Earlier this year, NBC News reported findings from the internet
grocery-delivery company Instacart that customers’ searches for “nondairy”
were up by 222 percent. Instacart’s head of communications said, “Coconut, soy,
and almond milks are all having a moment, and are in everything from yogurt to
ice cream to creamer.
Saputo isn’t the first dairy company to notice that
consumers are switching to plant-based milk. Recently, Elmhurst Dairy in Queens,
New York, closed down after 90
years and reopened as a plant-based milk company.
This is great news for farmed animals. At dairy factory
farms, cows are treated as mere milk-producing machines. They are forcibly
impregnated and kept in terrible conditions. Calves are torn away from
their mothers shortly after birth. Male calves are killed for veal. Females are
forced into the dairy herd, trapped in a cycle of abuse for years until they
are considered “spent and sent to slaughter.
