It’s not uncommon for vegetarians and vegans to hear friends
and family tell them they need meat to get protein, but this couldn’t be more
of a myth.
First off, there are millions of vegetarians in the world,
and a plant-based diet isn’t a new idea. The
truth is people have been passing on meat for centuries. Records reveal that
the ancient civilizations of Greece and India thrived on a vegetarian diet. In
Asia, a mostly vegetarian diet has always been the norm. For millennia people have
lived healthy lives without eating meat.
So where do people who eschew meat get their protein? The
answer is simple: plants. Vegetarians know that there are plenty of protein-packed
plant-based foods, including tofu, lentils, beans, seeds, broccoli, avocados, and
quinoa! Did you know that there are 21 grams of protein per
100 grams of black beans and only 14 grams of protein in the same amount of
beef? Chew on that.
Plant-based foods are not only protein powerhouses; they’re
also a lot healthier. Health experts have discovered that a plant-based diet reduces
one’s risk of cancer,
heart
disease, diabetes,
kidney
failure, and more.

This is why professional athletes, including tennis champ
Serena Williams, NFL player David Carter, and the world’s strongest man, Patrik
Baboumian, have all adopted nutritious, high-protein vegan diets.
So don’t buy into the meat-protein myth. By switching to delicious
plant-based proteins you’ll improve your health, not to mention safeguard the planet
and help animals.
