Today Eggland’s Best, the nation’s number one specialty egg brand, pledged that 100 percent of its eggs would be cage-free by 2025. The move, which will spare more than 15 million hens from suffering in tiny wire cages, follows a shocking undercover investigation and weeks of campaigning by Mercy For Animals.
MFA’s hidden-camera footage exposed thousands of birds packed so tightly into filthy wire cages the birds were hardly able to move without crawling over other birds. Severely sick and injured birds were left to suffer and slowly die without proper veterinary care, and the bodies of dead animals were seen rotting in cages with live birds still laying eggs for human consumption.
Eggland’s Best’s statement is the latest in a wave of cage-free egg commitments by leading food retailers, including Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons, Safeway, Costco, Target, and Publix, and more than 100 other food companies. Restaurants such as McDonald’s, Burger King, and Subway have also demanded their egg suppliers stop cramming hens into cages. Even major egg producers, including Rembrandt Foods, are going cage-free.
While cage-free doesn’t mean cruelty-free, Eggland’s Best’s new cage-free egg policy will reduce the suffering of countless hens and hopefully inspire other food companies to commit to similar policies.
