Quorn Invests More Than $9 Million in New Research and Development Facility

To meet the growing demand for meat substitutes, U.K. plant-based company Quorn has invested more than $9 million in a new facility for research and development and is working on its own vegan burger that “bleeds.

According to Quorn CEO Kevin Brennan, in the first six months of this year, the brand’s sales have increased 12 percent in the U.K., 50 percent in Australia, and 23 percent in the U.S.

While all of Quorn’s products are vegetarian, some contain egg. But after a surge in demand for its vegan products, the company is quickly developing more.

Brennan told The Guardian:
All over the world we have seen a real step-change in the way people are eating. Young consumers are really starting to have concerns around meat from a health and sustainability point of view. It’s not that younger consumers are all turning vegan or vegetarian but they are eating substantially less meat.
Quorn isn’t the only plant-based company seeing its sales rise as meat consumption plummets. Recently, Beyond Meat, the maker of the Beyond Burger and Beyond Sausage, announced it was building a second production facility to keep up with demand for its products. The new location in Missouri will not only increase production of the mock meats we know and love but create about 250 jobs.

People all around the globe are ditching animal products in favor of a healthy, sustainable, and compassionate vegan diet. The research firm Global Data reports that veganism in America increased by 600 percent between 2014 and 2017, and Allied Market Research predicts that the meat substitute market will grow 8.4 percent from 2015, potentially reaching $5.2 billion globally by 2020.

Why is plant-based eating taking over? Well, in the past decade veganism has seen consistent growth as millennials—now the world’s largest generation—purchase their own food. Concerned about health, the environment, and animal welfare, this generation boasts more self-identifying vegetarians than any other, according to The New York Times.

More people enjoying vegan food is great news for the billions of animals who suffer at factory farms. Cows, pigs, chickens, and fish raised and killed for food are subjected to unthinkable cruelties: tiny, filthy cages; horrific mutilations; and violent slaughter.

With more and more delicious vegan products hitting the market, there’s truly never been a better time to switch to a compassionate vegan lifestyle.
