Today Sonic Drive-In, the largest chain of drive-in restaurants in the United States, announced a comprehensive chicken welfare policy for its more than 3,500 locations. The company’s pledge follows a months-long public awareness campaign by Mercy For Animals that called on Sonic to prevent needless animal abuse by banning some of the cruelest factory farming practices from its supply chain.
Sonic’s pledge is part of a significant industry trend. FOCUS Brands—parent company of Moe’s, Schlotzsky’s, McAlister’s Deli, Cinnabon, Carvel, and Auntie Anne’s—also recently made an identical commitment to using only chicken that meets standards laid out by Global Animal Partnership.
Despite pledges by dozens of their industry peers and overwhelming consumer demand, some restaurant chains have failed to take needed action.
Wendy’s, for one, has yet to make the same critical public commitment as competitors Sonic, Burger King, and Jack in the Box.
