Statement on Washington’s Octopus Farming Ban

The following statement regarding Washington State’s ban on octopus farming may be attributed to Alex Cerussi, Senior State Policy Manager at Mercy For Animals:

Mercy For Animals commends Washington for becoming the first state to ban octopus farming and applauds Pasado’s Safe Haven for leading this initiative. Octopuses are highly intelligent and emotionally complex animals, and they should not be confined to crowded farms in unnatural conditions.

Octopus farming is cruel, unsustainable, and environmentally destructive, as it threatens local ecosystems. This is a huge win for animals and the planet, and Mercy For Animals hopes that other states will follow Washington’s lead and prohibit octopus farming.
