Mercy For Animals Releases New Plan to End Industrial Animal Agriculture

Mercy For Animals just released a bold and ambitious three-year strategic plan! We envision a world in which we nourish ourselves with food that is kind to animals and sustainable for the planet and all who share it. The plan outlines our strategy for making this vision a reality.

In the next three years, Mercy For Animals will make more headway in our mission to end industrial animal agriculture and construct a just and sustainable global food system. We have identified five organizational priorities:

  1. Decrease the number of animals in the food system
  2. Reduce suffering for farmed animals who are trapped in the food system
  3. Build people power and increase public awareness to drive change
  4. Develop solutions that speed the transition from industrial animal agriculture
  5. Create a thriving internal culture and strong infrastructure

While these five priorities will guide Mercy For Animals’ actions, each regional team—the United States and Canada, Brazil, Mexico, India, and East and Southeast Asia—has set its own strategy. Below are some of the ways the United States and Canada will advance these priorities.

Establishing Plant-Based Options as a Restaurant-Chain Standard

Encouraging and facilitating plant-based options at major restaurant chains will help decrease the number of animals in the food system. Our goal is for all major U.S. restaurant chains to offer at least one center-of-plate vegan menu option by the end of 2024.

Holding Companies Accountable

Mercy For Animals has played a key role in securing hundreds of cage-free, crate-free, and “broiler” chicken welfare policies through corporate engagement and powerful investigations. This important work is part of reducing suffering for farmed animals. As implementation deadlines for these policies approach, we will focus on ensuring that companies follow through on their commitments.

Investing More in Public Awareness

Nothing can be accomplished without people power! In the next three years, we aim to be the go-to organization for media and celebrities on factory farming and other farmed animal issues. This will enable us to increase public awareness and drive change.

Collaborating to Change the Narrative About Industrial Animal Agriculture

Mercy For Animals will continue to join forces with farmers, policymakers, and agricultural organizations to help transition to a more plant-based food system. Our goal is to have modeled a diverse set of farm transitions—from raising animals to growing crops—by the end of 2024. These collaborations will help speed the transition from industrial animal agriculture.
