Tyson Foods CEO Tom Hayes recently told Fox Business: “Plant-based protein is growing almost, at this point, a little faster than animal-based, so I think the migration may continue in that direction.
This must be why Tyson has started investing heavily in plant-based protein. Last year, it invested in vegan meat company Beyond Meat for a 5 percent stake. The company also launched a $150-million venture capital fund to invest in startups that develop meat substitutes.
Why is this a good thing? Because if Tyson Foods, the largest meat producer in the U.S. and the largest chicken producer in the world, thinks the future of meat is vegan, it’s truly over for factory farms.
Tyson knows its cruel and environmentally destructive business model is a disaster. Also, multiple undercover investigations into Tyson farms by Mercy For Animals have revealed a culture of cruelty and neglect. Take a look:
Tyson has also been caught polluting the environment. According to a 2016 Environment America report, the company dumped more than six times as much toxic waste into waterways as Exxon for the years included in the report.
But it’s not just animals and the planet paying the price. Workers at Tyson factory farms are also suffering. Consider that they regularly lose limbs on the job due to unsafe conditions.
As if all this weren’t enough to make any new CEO blanche, just this week a strain of bird flu emerged on a Tyson chicken farm in Tennessee.
The future is no place for factory farms. Companies like Tyson are waking up to that.
