Vegan Cheese Taking Over New York’s Food Scene

Joe Loria April 18, 2016
Nowadays, giving up dairy no longer means giving up creamy,
flavorful cheese.
As vegan food writer Alicia Kennedy proudly proclaims in The Village Voice, “We are living in the age of vegan cheese that
doesn’t suck.
She couldn’t be more right. Creamy cheeses (not the
synthetic-tasting nondairy cheeses of yesterday) are all the rage right now in
the New York food scene. Most are made
from nuts and they all taste amazing!
You don’t need to be a foodie or even a vegan to appreciate
them. Simply stop by one of the many food joints mastering the art of flavorful
vegan cheese. Alicia suggests restaurants like 00 + Co in the East Village and
Bed-Stuy’s Toad Style.
Dairy-free cheese shops are also popping up across the city.
From Riverdel in Prospect Heights to Dr. Cow in Williamsburg, these are great places
to get a block to bring home and share with friends.
But what’s the difference between these and the vegan
cheeses you buy in Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s? Do a taste test and you’ll
immediately notice the difference. These specialty nut cheeses are often aged
and mimic the textures and sharp flavors of dairy cheeses.
