Vegan Meat Co. Upton’s Now Available in 5,000 U.S. Stores, 15 Countries

Ari Solomon December 14, 2018
Chicago-based Upton’s Naturals announced that
its products are now sold
in over 5,000 stores across the U.S., including
Whole Foods, Walmart, Wegmans, Sprouts, Safeway, and Stop & Shop. It has also launched products in 15 countries, from the U.K.
and Iceland to Chile!
Upton’s introduced its first seitan products in local Chicago
stores back in 2006. Since then, the company has been largely credited for the
jackfruit boom, as the first company to bring seasoned, ready-to-eat jackfruit
to North America and Europe.
All of us at Mercy For Animals are grateful to Upton’s not
only for its delicious and widely available vegan meat alternatives but for its
activism as well. In 2013, when Upton’s was expanding into a new 10,000-square-foot
production facility to keep up with growing demand, the
company displayed MFA’s “Why love one but eat the other? campaign banner

for all passersby to see. Additionally, Upton’s was one of the sponsors
of MFA’s Hidden Heroes Gala
, our largest fundraiser of the year, which
raised over $1.2 million!
It’s no surprise that vegan companies like Upton’s are expanding
into other countries, since interest in plant-based eating has skyrocketed
virtually everywhere. In fact, in the U.S. alone, there were six
times as many vegans in 2017 as in 2014
, according to one study. And in
Australia the number of vegan products rose
by 92 percent between 2014 and 2016
. What’s more, a whopping 7
percent of the U.K. population
identifies as vegan, while a 2016 study
found that 4.3 percent of
Germans
between 18 and 79 identified as vegetarian.
Of course, this is all good news for the billions of animals
who suffer miserably in factory farms and slaughterhouses. From birth to death,
these animals’ lives are filled with pain, deprivation, and torment. But don’t
take our word for it—see for yourself.
